Following his successful title defense against Marlon Vera at UFC 299, bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley wasted no time in identifying his next potential opponents. In his post-fight interview, "Sugar" O'Malley called out featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, followed by a mention of the number one contender at 135 pounds, Merab Dvalishvili, during his press conference.

However, rather than pursuing a lucrative showdown with O'Malley, Topuria responded by stating that he isn't currently interested and believes Dvalishvili deserves the title shot. This sentiment was echoed by Dvalishvili, illustrating the mutual respect shared between the two elite fighters representing Georgia. "El Matador" Dvalishvili emphasized his support for his compatriot's pursuit of UFC gold, recognizing the importance of unity within their national contingent.

In a recent interview with Nolan King for MMA Junkie, Dvalishvili expressed his understanding of Topuria's decision, citing the featherweight champion's character and integrity. Dvalishvili also disclosed his intention to meet with Topuria in the near future, emphasizing their camaraderie and shared values. He reiterated his admiration for Topuria's conduct, affirming their mutual support and camaraderie as they continue to progress in their respective careers.

"Ilia is a true champion and a genuine person, and I consider him my brother. He made the right decision, and I fully support him," Dvalishvili stated. "We don't need to discuss the situation regarding O'Malley; Ilia knows what it means to be a real man and champion. I look forward to spending time with him soon, whether in Georgia or Spain, and continuing to support each other as we pursue our goals in life and in the octagon."
